4月12日下午,中科院院士、南京大学校长谈哲敏在北京会见世界气象组织秘书长佩蒂瑞·塔拉斯(Petteri Taalas)、助理秘书长张文建一行。双方就深化合作等议题展开交流,并签署谅解备忘录。
谈哲敏对秘书长的来访表示欢迎和感谢。他指出,南京大学历史悠久,综合实力与科研实力位于中国和世界的前列。南京大学一直秉持国际开放办学传统,与全世界200余所大学与科研机构保持深度合作,与联合国渊源深厚,与世界气象组织合作紧密,加入多个世界气象组织科学计划。南京大学重视国际化人才培养,通过中美中心、南赫学院等国际联合学院或项目培养大量科研、外交人才。他期待在中国气象局的支持下,继续深化与世界气象组织在人才培养、科学研究、社会服务等方面的全面合作。
塔拉斯高度认可南京大学为培养社会各领域顶尖人才和研究气候与环境问题做出的积极贡献,愿同南京大学进一步加强气候、气象等领域的人才与科研合作。他同时表示,很高兴南京大学与他的母校赫尔辛基大学在大气与地球系统科学领域共同建设国际联合学院,并将继续期待和支持南赫学院未来的发展。
张文建表示,加强大学与国际组织的交流合作,促进学生、青年教师到世界气象组织实习任职,有助于增进互信,增强师生对全球气候治理、国际组织事务的理解。世界气象组织将继续支持与南京大学的合作。
4与13日下午,塔拉斯一行访问南京大学,副校长王振林在仙林校区会见来宾。双方就深化国际合作、支持南京大学南赫学院建设等议题展开深入讨论。会后,塔拉斯秘书长在图书馆报告厅为我校师生作主题为“气候变化与世界气象组织倡议”的学术报告,现场座无虚席。

Nanjing University President meets with World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General and Assistant Secretary-General
On April 12, Prof. TAN Zhemin, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Nanjing University (NJU), met with Prof. Petteri TAALAS, Secretary-General of World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and ZHANG Wenjian, Assistant Secretary-General of WMO in Beijing. The two sides exchanged views on deepening cooperation and signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
Prof. TAN Zhemin expressed his warm welcome and appreciation to Prof. Petteri TAALAS. He pointed out that Nanjing University has a long history, with its comprehensive strengths at the forefront of China and the world. NJU has always adhered to the tradition of internationalization, maintaining in-depth cooperation with more than 200 universities and scientific institutes around the world. It has a deep relationship with the United Nations and close cooperation with the WMO, and has joined many WMO scientific programs. The university attaches great importance to cultivating international professionals with a global vision and has trained outstanding talents for the society and will continue to do so through the Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies, the Nanjing-Helsinki Institute in Atmospheric and Earth System Sciences of Nanjing University (NJU Nanjing-Helsinki Institute) and other joint programs. Prof. TAN looks forward to further deepening comprehensive cooperation with WMO in talent cultivation, scientific research and social services with the support of China Meteorological Administration (CMA).
Prof. Petteri TAALAS highly recognizes the contributions made by NJU in talent training and climate and environment related research, and is willing to further strengthen the cooperation with NJU in the fields of climate, meteorology and other areas of common interest. He also expressed his pleasure that NJU and his Alma Mater, the University of Helsinki, jointly built the international institute in atmospheric and earth system sciences. He would continue to support the development of the joint institute and look forward to its success.
Dr. ZHANG Wenjian remarked that strengthening exchanges and cooperation between universities and international organizations, and promoting the internship and JPO program of WMO would help enhance mutual trust and deepen their understanding of global climate governance and international organization affairs.
On April 13, Prof. TAALAS and the delegation visited Nanjing University. Vice President, Prof. WANG Zhenlin met with guests on Xianlin Campus. They held in-depth discussions on deepening international cooperation and supporting the development of NJU Nanjing-Helsinki Institute.
After the meeting, Prof. TAALAS made an academic report on the theme of Climate Change and WMO activities in the university library lecture hall, which was packed. The delegation then visited the Station for Observing Regional Processes of the Earth System (SORPES) at the School of Atmospheric Sciences.
Senior officers of relevant departments of CMA, heads of the School of Atmospheric Sciences, the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges and the Student Career & Development Center of NJU attended relevant events.
